Inherited from Eastern Magadhi Apabhramsa *𑀪𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*bhaṭṭa), deaspirated from Prakrit 𑀪𑀝𑁆𑀞 (bhaṭṭha, “fallen, declined”), from Sanskrit भ्रष्ट (bhraṣṭa, “fallen, ruined”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *bʰraṣṭás, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰraštás, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrn̥ḱtós (“deviated, corrupted”), from *bʰrenḱ- (“to deviate, corrupt”), with semantic shift in Prakrits from moral decline to literal (physical) decline, often in relation with water. Cognate with Assamese ভাটা (bhata), Odia ଭଟା (bhôṭa), Bihari भाठ (bhāṭh, “land which retains moisture”), Hindi भाठा (bhāṭhā), भाटा (bhāṭā), Gujarati ભાઠ (bhāṭh, “shoal, shallow”), Sindhi ڀاٽو (bhāṭho), Sinhalese බට (baṭa, “descent”).
