Borrowed from Classical Persian کبوتر (kabūtar), from Middle Persian [script needed] (kpwtl /kabōtar/, “pigeon”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kapáwtas (“pigeon”); displacing the native term કપોત (kapot), of the same origin. Compare Hindi कबूतर (kabūtar).
