Borrowed from Classical Persian کبوتر (kabūtar), from Middle Persian [script needed] (kpwtl /⁠kabōtar⁠/, pigeon), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kapáwtas (pigeon); displacing the native term કપોત (kapot), of the same origin. Compare Hindi कबूतर (kabūtar).
