Inherited from Gurjara Apabhramsa मकखण (makakhaṇa), from Prakrit 𑀫𑀁𑀔𑀡 (maṃkhaṇa), from Sanskrit म्रक्षण (mrakṣaṇa, rubbing, ointment, oil), nominalized from the verb म्रक्षति (mrakṣati, to smear, rub, anoint). Cognate with Bengali মাখন (makhon), Hindustani مکھن / मक्खन (makkhan), Marathi माखण (mākhaṇ), Punjabi ਮੱਖਣ (makkhaṇ).
