Inherited from Old Gujarati सुरताण (suratāṇa), ultimately from from Arabic سُلْطَان (sulṭān), from Aramaic שׁוּלְטָנָא / ܫܘܼܠܛܵܢܵܐ (šulṭānā, “power”). Entirely superseded by the modern borrowing સુલતાન (sultān).
