Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀑𑀝𑁆𑀞 (*oṭṭha), from Sanskrit ओष्ठ (oṣṭha), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *HáwHṣṭʰas, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *HáwHštʰas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃éh₁os (mouth). Cognate with Assamese ওঁঠ (ü̃th), Hindi होंठ (hõṭh), Kamta ওঠ (üth).
