Odia
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑁄𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀭 (govvara), from Sanskrit गोर्वर (gorvara, “pulverized cow dung”), a compound of गो (go, “cow”) + वर (vara, “gift, blessing”), literally “gift of the cow”, since cow dung was used for various important purposes (like as a fuel, a fertilizer, and even as an ingredient for rituals). Cognate with Assamese গোবৰ (gübor), Bengali গোবর (gōbor), Hindi गोबर (gobar) and Sylheti ꠉꠥꠙꠞ (gufor).
