From Sanskrit देश (deśa, point, region, spot, place, part, portion; province, country, kingdom) + आचार (ācāra, custom, practice, usage, traditional or immemorial usage). Cognates include Telugu దేశాచారము (dēśācāramu), Malayalam ദേശാചാരം (dēśācāraṁ).
