Etymology 1

Ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *aṇi (“army”). Cognate with Tamil அணி (aṇi, “array of an army, order, regularity, row; to put in array (as an army)”), Malayalam അണി (aṇi, “row, line of soldiers”), Kannada ಅಣಿ (aṇi, “an array, body of soldiers”).

అని • (ani)

1. used as a connecting particle, often translated as "that" or "so":
   1. as a marker of indirect report or command

      డబ్బు ఇస్తాను అని చెప్పేడు. ― ḍabbu istānu ani ceppēḍu. ― He said he would give money.

      వెంటనే బయల్దేరం అని ఆజ్ఞ వచ్చింది. ― veṇṭanē bayaldēraṁ ani ājña vaccindi. ― An order came to start immediately.

   2. to subordinate a clause to a verb expressing knowledge, thinking, fearing, etc.

      అది ఎలా చేయాలా అని దిగులు పడుతున్నాను. ― adi elā cēyālā ani digulu paḍutunnānu. ― I am worried about how I should do it.

      కన్న తల్లి మనస్సు బాధ పెట్టడం ఎందుకు అని నేను ఆ విషయాలేమీ మాట్ళాడలేదు. ― kanna talli manassu bādha peṭṭaḍaṁ enduku ani nēnu ā viṣayālēmī māṭḷāḍalēdu. ― Thinking, why should I worry my own mother, I talked of none of those things.

      పూజక్ అని తెచ్చిన బెల్లం గడ్డలను ఎఙిలి చేసేడు. ― pūjak ani teccina bellaṁ gaḍḍalanu eṅili cēsēḍu. ― He defiled the jaggery balls that had been brought for (use in) worship.

   3. to subordinate a causal clause to a main clause in which the subject is human

      ఒంటికి మంచిది కాద్ అని సిగరెట్ళు తాగడం మానేసేను. ― oṇṭiki mañcidi kād ani sigareṭḷu tāgaḍaṁ mānēsēnu. ― I gave up smoking cigarettes because it was not good for my health.

2. other usages:
   1. (with infinitive) to want

      నాకు సినిమా చూడాల్ అని ఉంది. ― nāku sinimā cūḍāl ani undi. ― I want to see a movie.

      మీకు ఆ పని చేద్దాం అనిఉందా? ― mīku ā pani cēddāṁ aniundā? ― Do you want to do that work?

   2. suffixed to onomatopoeic words ~ gives adverbial force

      బుస్సుమ్ అని ― bussum ani ― hissingly (of snakes)

   3. (in the form అని కాదు (ani kādu)) negates a preceding clause or sentence

      అందుకని పరాయి పదాలను అన్నిటినీ నెట్టడమ్ అని కాదు. ― andukani parāyi padālanu anniṭinī neṭṭaḍam ani kādu. ― That is not to say (or that does not mean) that for that reason we should reject all foreign words.
