From Sanskrit दीर्घ ‎(dīrgha) +‎ -ము ‎(-mu), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *drHgʰa-, from Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁gʰós ‎(long). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎥 ‎(darga), Avestan 𐬛𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬔𐬀 ‎(darǝga-, long), Latin longus, Old Church Slavonic дльгъ ‎(dlĭgŭ).
