From Sanskrit धूम (dhūmá, smoke, vapor, mist) +‎ -ము (-mu); from Proto-Indo-European *dʰuh₂mós (smoke). Cognates include Ancient Greek θυμός (thumós), Latin fūmus and Old Church Slavonic дꙑмъ (dymŭ).
