From Sanskrit नर ‎(nára) +‎ -డు ‎(-ḍu); from Proto-Indo-European *h₂nḗr. Cognates include Ancient Greek ἀνήρ ‎(anḗr), Persian نر ‎(nar) and Old Armenian այր ‎(ayr).
