From Proto-Dravidian *puẓu (worm). Cognate with Kannada ಹುಳು (huḷu, worm,insect), Kodava ಪುಳು (puḷu, worm, insect), Tamil புழு (puḻu, worm), Telugu పురుగు (purugu, worm, insect), Tulu ಪುರಿ (puri, worm, insect) and Brahui پُو (, worm).
