Etymology[edit]

From an Indonesian language. Compare Indonesian kecapi, Sundanese kacapi, Maguindanaon kutiyapi, Maranao kotyapi, Subanon kotapi, Bukidnon kudyapi, and Palawan kusyapi. Ultimately from Sanskrit कच्छपी ‎(kacchapī), a kind of lute (so named because it is similar in shape to the tortoise; compare तेस्तुदो ‎(testudo)).
