From Proto-Tai *C̬.qawꟲ (rice),[1] further from Proto-Austroasiatic *rŋkoːʔ (husked rice).[2]

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩮᩢ᩶ᩣ (xao), Isan เข่า or เข้า, Southern Thai ค้าว, Lao ເຂົ້າ (khao), ᦃᧁᧉ (ẋaw²), Tai Dam ꪹꪄ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၶဝ်ႈ (khāo), Tai Nüa ᥑᥝᥲ (xàw), Phake ၵွ် (khaw), Ahom 𑜁𑜧 (khaw) or 𑜁𑜨𑜧 (khow) or 𑜁𑜧𑜈𑜫 (khaww), Nùng khàu, Zhuang haeux, Saek เกฺา, Tày khẩu.
