From Proto-Tai *ɟiːᶜ (to point), from Middle Chinese (MC tsyijX, “finger; to point; to indicate”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨩᩦ᩶, Lao ຊີ້ (), ᦋᦲᧉ (tsii²), Tai Dam ꪋꪲ꫁, Shan ၸီႉ (tsḭ̂i), Ahom 𑜋𑜣 (chī). Compare Vietnamese chỉ, chĩa.
