From Proto-Southwestern Tai *siːꟲ¹ (“rib; tooth (of a comb, rake, etc)”). Cognate with Khün ᩈᩦ᩶, Tai Dam ꪏꪲ꪿, Lü ᦉᦲᧉ (ṡii²), Shan သီႈ (sīi), Tai Nüa ᥔᥤᥲ (sì), Phake ꩬီ (sī), Ahom 𑜏𑜣 (sī).
