Etymology

From Proto-Tai *C̥.dipᴰ (raw; not ripe). Cognate with Lao ດິບ (dip), Shan လိပ်း (líp), Zhuang ndip. Within Kra-Dai, compare Sui qdyubs, Proto-Hlai *Cuɾiːp (whence riːp⁷~viːp⁷~fiːp⁸ across the different lects). Compare Proto-Austronesian *(ma-)qudip (to live; to be alive).
