Etymology

From นคร (ná-kɔɔn, city) +‎ นา (naa, rice field) +‎ ยก (yók, to exempt; to cancel); literally "city of exempted rice fields"; after the fact that the rice fields in this city were exempted from taxes during the Ayutthaya period.[1]
