From Proto-Tai *noːjꟲ (small). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨶᩬ᩠᩶ᨿ, Lao ນ້ອຍ (nǭi), ᦓᦾᧉ (noay²), Tai Dam ꪙ꫁ꪮꪥ, Tai Dón ꪙꪮꪥꫂ, Shan ၼွႆႉ (nâ̰ui), Tai Nüa ᥘᥩᥭᥳ (lȯay) or ᥢᥩᥭᥳ (nȯay), Phake ꩫ︀ွႝ (noy), Ahom 𑜃𑜨𑜩 (noy) or 𑜃𑜨𑜐𑜫 (noñ), Zhuang noix. Compare also หน่อย (nɔ̀i).
