From Proto-Southwestern Tai *mlaːkᴰᴸ⁴ (much). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨾᩣ᩠ᨠ, Lao ມາກ (māk), ᦙᦱᧅ (maak), Shan မၢၵ်ႈ (māak), Tai Nüa ᥛᥣᥐ (maak), Phake မ︀က︀် (mak), Ahom *𑜉𑜀𑜫 (*mak) (close meaning: wealthy).
