From Austroasiatic. Compare Mon ဇဗၠူ (həpluˀ, betel) and Vietnamese trầu (betel) (< Proto-Vietic *b-luː).[1] Cognate with Lao ພູ (phū), Northern Thai ᨻᩖᩪ, Khün ᨻᩪ, ᦗᦴ (puu), Tai Dam ꪝꪴ (ꞌpú), Tai Dón ꪝꪴ, Shan ပူႉ (pṵ̂u), Tai Nüa ᥙᥧᥳ (pu̇), Ahom 𑜆𑜥 ().
