Etymology

[edit]

Possibly from common Tai derived compound words หมาก (màak, blister; rash) +‎ เรง (reeng, small) in the sense of inflaming skin rash.[1] Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᨾᩣ᩠ᨠᩁᩮ᩠ᨦ (inflaming tumor on skin) and Shan မၢၵ်ႇႁဵင်း (màak háeng, cancerous tumor). Or, possibly Semi-learned borrowing from Malay merengsa (irritant; incurable, obstinate, unhealable).[2][3] Compare Khmer ម្រេញ (mrɨñ, cancer; ulcer).
