Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tai *naːjᴬ (maternal grandmother). The /n-/ -> /j-/ transformation is due to contamination by ย่า (yâa, paternal grandmother), which is semantically similar. Compare Indonesian nyai; Khmer យាយ (yiəy); Lao ຍາຍ (nyāi), ຍາຽ (nyāi); Shan ၼၢႆး (náai).
