Thai

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰrɔːŋꟲ (room; compartment; space).

Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩬ᩶ᨦ, Lao ຫ້ອງ (hǭng), ᦆᦸᧂᧉ (xoang²), Shan ႁွင်ႈ (hāung), Tai Dam ꪬ꫁ꪮꪉ, Tai Nüa ᥞᥩᥒᥲ (hòang), Phake ꩭွင︀် (hoṅ), Ahom 𑜍𑜨𑜂𑜫 (roṅ) or 𑜑𑜨𑜂𑜫 (hoṅ), Nong Zhuang ruk.

Almost certainly unrelated to Proto-Finnic *hoonëh (room), despite phonetic and semantic similarities.
