From Proto-Southwestern Tai *kletᴰ, from Proto-Tai *klecᶜ, from Old Chinese (OC *kreːds, “shell; to wear armour”).[1] Cognate with Northern Thai ᨠᩖᩮᩢᨯ, Lao ເກັດ (ket), ᦵᦂᧆ (k̇ed), Shan ၵဵတ်း (káet).
