Etymology

From Proto-Tai *C̬.qawᶜ (rice), from Austroasiatic; compare Proto-Mon-Khmer *rk[aw]ʔ (husked rice) (Sagart, 2003). Cognate with Thai ข้าว (kâao), Northern Thai ᨡᩮᩢ᩶ᩣ, Lao ເຂົ້າ (khao), ᦃᧁᧉ (ẋaw²), Tai Dam ꪹꪄ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၶဝ်ႈ (khāo), Ahom 𑜁𑜧 (khaw), 𑜁𑜨𑜧 (khow) or 𑜁𑜧𑜈𑜫 (khaww), Zhuang haeux.
