Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ɟɤːkᴰ (rope; cord). Cognate with Lao ເຊືອກ (sư̄ak), ᦵᦋᦲᧅ (tsoek), Tai Dam ꪹꪋꪀ, Shan ၸိူၵ်ႈ (tsōek), Tai Nüa ᥓᥫᥐ (tsoek), Ahom 𑜋𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (chük), Zhuang cag or cieg, Nong Zhuang zowg. Compare Mon ဇုက် and Proto-Vietic *ɟaːk (whence Vietnamese chạc).
