From Proto-Tai *beːᶜ (to defeat; to be defeated), that modern meaning (to be defeated) became opposite from archaic meaning (to defeat). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩯ᩶, Lao ແພ້ (phǣ), ᦶᦗᧉ (pae²), Shan ပေႉ (pḛ̂e).
