From Proto-Tai *k.raj (illness; fever). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨡᩱ ᩶, Lao ໄຂ້ (khai), ᦺᦃᧉ (ẋay²), Shan ၶႆႈ (khāi), Ahom 𑜁𑜩 (khay).
