From Proto-Tai *C̬.qɤmᴬ (“bitter”). Cognate with Thai ขม (kǒm), Lü ᦃᦳᧄ (ẋum), Tai Dam ꪶꪄꪣ, Shan ၶူမ် (khǔum), Ahom 𑜁𑜪𑜤 (khǔum), Zhuang haemz, Saek กฺั๊ม.
