[edit]From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *zrjaŋ ~ rjaŋ (“uncle, superior”). cf. Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-tjaŋ (“upper part, rise, raise, top, summit”)). Cognate with 尚 (OC *djaŋ, *djaŋs) "upwards" and Chinese 丈 (zhàng, “gentleman; husband”).
