Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *muːŋ ~ r/s-muːk (sky, clouds, fog). Doublet of မြူ (mru, fog).

The "roof, hold over, tower" senses are considered equivalent to the "sky" sense by MED, but possibly different by STEDT (amui: "roof"). They appear to be semantic extensions from "sky" > "what lies above" > "roof, hold over".
