Particularly: “Not given etymology by STEDT (ə-lat "middle"), and not mentioned by Luce 1981. Has the same initial as လယ် (lai, “middle, center”), but doesn't appear to be related based on the different final.

The "fair, fresh" sense is grouped with the "medium" sense by MED (averaged-out items tend to be more pleasant, as noted when looking at average face morphs), though this is quite dubious. Either way, not given etymology by STEDT (lat "fresh, new") nor mentioned by Luce 1981.”
