From Old Georgian აბანო ‎(abano), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ban- (whence also ბანაობა ‎(banaoba), ბანაობს ‎(banaobs), დაბანა ‎(dabana), დაბანილი ‎(dabanili), განბანა ‎(ganbana), დაიბანა ‎(daibana), დაბანა ‎(dabana), etc.). Cognate with Mingrelian ბონუა ‎(bonua, to wash oneself), აბანა ‎(abana) and Laz ობონუ ‎(obonu, to wash oneself).
