Etymology[edit]

From Old Georgian ელვაჲ (elvay), from Proto-Kartvelian *el- (to sparkle (of lightning)). Cognate with Mingrelian ვალუა (valua), Laz ოვალუ (ovalu) and Svan ჰელ (hel).
