Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Middle Georgian ელჩი (elči).[1] Of Turkic-Mongolic origin, entering the Georgian language after the Mongol conquest (13th century). Compare Turkish elçi, Kazakh елші (elşı), Mongolian элч (elč).
