Etymology[edit]

From Old Georgian ოფოფი (opopi), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *opop- (hoopoe). Compare Mingrelian ოფოფი (opopi) and Laz ოფამფე (opampe). Likely of onomatopeic origin, but compare also similar words in some Indo-European languages, such as Latin upupa, Ancient Greek ἔποψ (épops), Latvian pupuķis, Armenian հոպոպ (hopop) and Persian پوپو(pōpō).
