From Proto-Georgian-Zan *(s)a-xl-, from *(s)a- +‎ *xal-, *xl- ‎(to be amidst, near something).

Dzidziguri has derived it from ხურო ‎(xuro), as it is known that სახურავი ‎(saxuravi, roof) is derived from ხურო ‎(xuro).
