From Old Georgian წყალი ‎(c̣q̇ali), from Proto-Kartvelian *c̣q̇al-. Cognate with Mingrelian წყუ ‎(c̣q̇u), წყარი ‎(c̣q̇ari) and possibly Svan ლჷლწყე ‎(ləlc̣q̇e, damp) (if not, then the reconstructed protoform belongs in Proto-Georgian-Zan).
