Etymology

Dative of *ᚲᚢᚾᛁᛗᚢᛞᚢᛉ (*kunimuduʀ /⁠Kunimunduʀ⁠/), from Proto-Germanic *Kunjamunduz, a compound of *kunją (“family, kin”) and *mundō (“protection”). Cognate with Latin Cunimundus, Old High German Chunimunt, Old English Cynemund. The u-stem dative singular -ᛁᚢ (-iu) comes from Proto-Germanic *-iwi, with a loss of the final *-i.
