[edit]From Angkorian Old Khmer chlū, chlu, from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer clau, clauhv, clov, from Old Khmer chlū, chlu, or chlūva (“ox (zodiac)”), from Vietic. Compare Old Mon jlow (“ox”) and Vietnamese trâu (“water buffalo”), which are true cognates. Thai ฉลู (chà-lǔu) was borrowed from Khmer (Ferlus, 2013).
