Etymology[edit]
From Old Khmer ឈេ (jhe), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟhooʔ ~ *ɟhəəʔ ~ *ɟheeʔ (“tree, wood”). Cognate with Semai jehuuq (“tree, wood”), Temiar jehuk (“tree, wood”), Mon ဆု (chuˀ, “tree, log, wood, timber”), Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] chīa (“tree”) and Mang hɔː⁶ (“tree”).
