From Proto-Tai *haːᶜ (five), from Old Chinese (OC *ŋaːʔ, “five”). Cognate with Thai ห้า (hâa), Northern Thai ᩉ᩶ᩣ, Lao ຫ້າ (), ᦠᦱᧉ (ḣaa²), Tai Dam ꪬ꫁ꪱ, Shan ႁႃႈ (hāa), Ahom 𑜑𑜡 (), Bouyei hac, Zhuang haj.
