Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *k-ʔoːs (guava (?)), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *pʔus ~ *pʔuus (guava (?)). Cognate with Muong ối, Koho pö'ous, Mang ʔuːj⁶.

Despite Shorto (2006) and Ferlus (2007)'s glosses, the respective Proto-Mon-Khmer and Proto-Vietic etyma might have originally referred to another kind of fruit resembling the New World imported guava (Psidium guajava).
