Etymology 1
[edit]First found from the Egyptiots Aretaios and Dioskurides, a borrowing from Coptic ⲕⲁⲕⲉ (kake), ⲕⲉⲕⲉⲓ (kekei, “darkness”) from Egyptian kkw (“darkness”), acknowledging its providing shade in the desert, with a preformative analogical to ἄκανθα (ákantha).
