Etymology

Unknown. The connection with Sanskrit अमीव (amīva, pain, grief) requires an unwarranted dissimilation m-ṷ > n-ṷ and should be rejected. As remarked by Nikolaev, derivation from *h₂eys- (to search) is semantically not very convincing; he proposed instead to connect the root *h₂eis(h₂) (to refresh).
