Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Connection with ἁρπάζω (harpázō, to snatch away) is improbable for a word "cord". Grošelj Živa connects the word with Lithuanian verpti (to spin), but the -αρ- must be analogical after -ερ-.
