Etymology[edit]

From ὕψι (húpsi, high), ὕψος (húpsos, height, summit) +‎ -λός (-lós). Compare Proto-Celtic *ouxselos, whence Old Irish úasal, Welsh uchel and the first part of Gaulish Uxellodunum.
