  1. (IPA) linking a.k.a. liaison: the absence of a break between words; the preceding consonant forms a syllable with the following vowel.
    E.g. French bon /bɔ̃/, but bon ami /bɔn‿ami/ (that is, [bɔ.na.mi]).
  2. (UPA) assimilation, either complete or partial.
    E.g. otʼiη‿kirvēm‿poes, with assimilation of the final nasals to the following consonant, or koetiv‿völjätäj‿ja, with complete assimilation. Linking in turn is indicated with ˽.
