From Demotic Egyptian M2lḏm (mḏl, onion), from a Semitic language. Compare Hebrew בָּצָל (bāṣāl), Arabic بَصَل (baṣal), and Aramaic בּוּצְלָא (būṣlā). Ultimately from Proto-West Semitic *baṣal- (onion).
